FELLOWSHIP
Background
SCSC established a fellowship dedicated to managing salinity in water resources in collaboration with the National Water Research Institute.
The NWR-SCSC Fellowship is a $5,000-a-year fellowship to support masters or doctoral graduate research addressing the critical need to remove or reduce salts from water supplies and to preserve water resources in Southern California.
Research areas include, but are not limited to, engineering sciences, physical and chemical sciences, biological sciences, health sciences, political sciences, and planning and public policy.
Examples of SCSC's specific research interests include (but are not limited to):
- Concentrate management.
- Institutional and regulatory issues.
- Economics of reducing salinity levels.
- Innovative treatment technologies.
- Regional and watershed planning solutions.
- Public education and awareness.
- Limitations.
Please note that students must be CURRENTLY enrolled in a Southern California academic institution to receive the Fellowship. Students who have not yet been accepted into an academic institution are NOT eligible to receive fellowship funding.
Application Requirements
Applicants for the NWRI-SCSC Fellowship must prepare an application package following NWRI's fellowship application procedures.
Application procedures can be viewed and downloaded at NWRI's website at www.nwri-usa.org/fellowship.htm.
Current Awardee
Kari Varin, a Ph.D. student at the University of California, Los Angeles, is the second recipient of NWRI-SCSC Fellowship. Varin's research is focused on developing high-performance membranes based on surface nano-structuring via atmospheric pressure plasma-induced surface graft polymerization.
The goal is to advance the science and engineering needed to allow reverse osmosis water desalination plants to operate at higher recovery without resorting to mineral scalents or other feed chemical additives, while reducing mineral scaling and biofouling propensity, resulting in lower costs for desalted water.
Varin was named the fellowship awardee in December 2010.
Availability
This Fellowship will be available again in 2012. Please see www.nwri-usa.org/fellowship.htm for more details.
